Cacnea (the Cactus Pokémon) is a relatively rare Grass-type Pokémon found among arid environments within the Hoenn, Sinnoh and Paldea regions as well as the Unova region on rare occasions. While they might be nearly impossible to find outside of the driest of environments, Cacnea are fascinating plants that truly take living a dry life to a new extreme. They might seem fairly friendly from afar, but you would be a fool to approach these strange cacti without protection; do so, and you'll probably end up getting the worst of their Pin Missile attack on the business-end!

To most people in the middle of a desert, these strange creatures might seem indistinguishable from regular cacti; the truth, of course, is far from that. Along with their evolved form and Maractus, Cacnea share the distinction of being the only-known sentient cacti plants and thus have access to an interesting set of attacks and abilities that are otherwise unseen among Grass-types. For one thing, Cacnea are benefited in battle by their unique Sand Veil Ability and are perfectly at home within arid environments as a result of their rubbery flesh, which act as the perfect anatomical reservoir for water and can efficiently store enough water to sustain Cacnea year-long without any shortage. This is in turn helped by the fact that Cacnea are extremely durable creatures and have been known to go as much as 30 days without draining a drop of water from their water reserves; any longer, though, and they begin to slowly wither. Moreover, Cacnea are extremely protective of their seeds and will only open the yellow flower on their heads up for pollination once a year, usually during the rainiest part of the year (which is reflected in the flower itself, as the vibrancy of its color and smell will increase if the year was particularly dry in order to compensate for less pollen and fewer seeds). This ensures that the air is moist enough to keep their pollen and seeds stable and prevent them from drying up too early. Of course, all of these features can be found in most types of cacti; what obviously makes Cacnea different is that they are very intelligent (more so than many other Grass-types) and are quite mobile despite the fact that their legs are little more than well-placed thorns. This actually proves to be a major advantage in terms of survival, as it allows Cacnea to move to places where rain might fall first and in turn enable them to escape pursing predators.

Cacnea usually stay motionless in order to conserve energy in water, but if any stray bird approaches them, the result is unlikely to be good for the bird. Although their defenses are not that good, Cacnea possess both surprising physical strength and considerable special powers (even though the only special attack they learn before evolution is Absorb) and are able to strike from afar with interesting attacks like Pin Missile to ward off predators, something that most bird Pokémon do not see coming and are easily frightened away by even if the damage done is minor. Cacnea use this same attack strategy when attempting to attract birds with the sweet aroma that wafts from their flower (as these creatures must drink blood on occasion in order to obtain otherwise scarce vital nutrients) before promptly bludgeoning their prey with their thorny arms. This in turn has made Cacnea a feared sight among desert travelers, as outside of their body shape, Cacnea are impossible to discern from normal cacti until they open their eyes and mouth and reveal themselves fully. Cacnea will only do this, however, if they are either safe or completely enraged, so the chances of it happening even after poking or kicking a hiding Cacnea are fairly slim. This can more often than not prove to be frustrating to trainers looking for one of these strange plants, as they are already fairly rare and the journey of punching or kicking any Cacnea-shaped cacti in sight can often prove to be more frustrating than helpful. Thankfully, Cacnea are friendly creatures and easy for trainers to get along with in most cases, so they can certainly make great additions to most teams.

Despite their rarity, Cacnea are powerful fighters that can make great of use of the otherwise underpowered attacks they learn in battle. With strong physical and special abilities on their side and a perfect resistance against the harsh weather of the desert, it can certainly be said that these little creatures can do things that would otherwise kill other plants. Just try not to be too affectionate to them if you can help it; they might be cute and fun-loving, but that doesn't mean that a hug from one is going to hurt any less!
