Deerling (the Season Pokémon) is a common Normal/Grass-type Pokémon found among grassy fields, rugged terrain and forests within the Unova and Paldea regions and the Blueberry Academy Terarium as well as the Hoenn region on rare occasions. Though relatively weak and generally unfit for extensive combat, Deerling are fascinating creatures that truly take seasonal changes to a whole new level of bizarreness. You might not find much favor with them until they're relatively close to evolution, but even dedicated Grass-type specialists should consider giving these cute critters a try; after all, it's not every day you find a plant capable of delivering punishing blows from attacks like Double Kick and Double Edge!

Deerling and Sawsbuck, much like Girafarig, represent a unique case in which perfectly regular Normal-types have acquired a bizarre secondary type through uncertain means. In the case of Deerling and Sawsbuck, though, the change proved to be far more bizarre than anything else imaginable, as they are the only known Normal/Grass-type Pokémon. At the moment, there is no fully-credible explanation behind why such a change would ever occur in the first place, but in all likelihood, it is almost certain that the natural habitats of these creatures played a critical role. It is entirely plausible that a natural food shortage could have induced this odd type-change in order to increase the chances of survival, as only water, sunlight and a few key nutrients are needed to keep most plants alive; even then, becoming part plant would seem to be an exceptionally drastic change, leaving the thought at odds with most other hypothesis. Regardless, the alteration has made Deerling and Sawsbuck genetically similar to deciduous trees and several types of mountain-borne grasses; as such, they share with them the distinction of changing appearances and even scent drastically with the seasons in response to temperature and humidity differences, becoming more colorful with a delicate, calm scent in spring and summer before becoming barren and their scent sweeter and dulled in autumn and winter and starting the process over again. In addition to visual changes, the passing of seasons brings about noticeable changes in the scent given off by these creatures' grass-like fur, as the concentration of chemical pheromones being released from their bodies lowers as winter begins to approach and eventually ceases altogether during the season, only starting back up again at the advent of spring. In terms of combat effectiveness, Deerling and Sawsbuck are not the strongest of fighters and only have access to a limited number of Grass-type moves; nonetheless, the fact that they are the only Normal-types capable of learning the Leech Seed, Aromatherapy, Energy Ball and Solar Beam moves makes them interesting fighters that can take on Water, Ground and especially Rock-type Pokémon more effectively than most other Normal-types.

Deerling are sometimes a bit timid, but in most cases they can be quite friendly and not afraid of people, and can prove to be a nuisance to farmers as they eat the fresh shoots of plants, requiring them to employ Lycanroc, their natural enemy, in order to ward them off. They will even go so far as to playfully headbutt others that they like for play, and tend to find favor with humans rather quickly if they are fed even just once directly. However, all of this can often get them into trouble when they wander into more urban locations where they do not belong, and thus tend to be seen as a big problem that only hunting can resolve to keep them at bay. As far as personal defense goes, until Deerling evolve, they generally rely on their sturdy hooves to deal considerable damage in battle with attacks like Double Kick, Jump Kick and Take Down, as they cannot learn any offensive special attacks until they are near evolution; only after evolution are they able to take full advantage of their physical and special abilities, leaving them at odds with more durable fighters in the meantime.

Despite their somewhat fragile bodies and average powers, Deerling are versatile creatures that can easily tackle many types that Normal-types would otherwise be ineffective against. They might not be able to do much in combat in their current state, but with enough training and dedication, these creatures can easily be made into potent fighters capable of surprising unprepared foes. Of course, if you have no desire to battle with them, you could just keep one around for the sake of your crops; after all, why rely on a fixed calendar when you have a living creature capable of letting you know exactly when it's the right time for planting and harvesting!?

Isn't it amazing how Deerlings change color depending on the season?
