Entei (the Volcano Pokémon) is a legendary Fire-type Pokémon found roaming among volcanoes and mountainous terrain across the world. Renowned for their impressive control over fire, Entei are mighty beasts that can easily burn anything that gets in their path to a fine powder, even if it's solid steel. You might never get the chance to see one of these powerful beasts, but if you live on a volcanic island, that may be for the best because the next time an Entei roars, you may end up losing your home or even your life!

Believed to embody the very passion and violent heat of magma, Entei are impressive creatures that are able to resist and generate massive quantities of heat without exerting much in the way of energy. Entei are unique among mammals and life forms in general in that they are able to generate powerful bursts of superheated air that ignite with such fury that they produce flames that are actually hotter than basaltic magma in many cases; due to a lack of anatomical data, unfortunately, it is unknown exactly how they are able to produce flames of such high temperatures without searing their own flesh and bone. Needless to say, though, this makes Entei exceptional fire-hazards as their intense flames will literally consume and burn anything they touch, turning even a vast field into a barren wasteland within seconds of exposure; in extreme cases, this power can even translate into a variation of the devastating Sacred Fire attack, a move that is otherwise solely associated with Ho-Oh, thanks to a special type of organic crystal that develops in their fur as a buffer against external heat. This intense heat seems to have an internal effect on Entei as well, as they can barely contain the pent-up heat within their bodies and must rush across the land almost constantly in order to keep themselves from overheating. In many island subcultures, Entei have become revered as symbols of volcanism in general and are thus seen as both symbols of prosperity and disaster; while the exact beliefs differ from region to region, there are two general beliefs that are shared by most island subcultures. One, it is believed that a new Entei is born every time a new volcano is born, a fact most likely linked to their preferences towards extreme heat. Second, it is believed that the roar from an Entei is enough to actually trigger a volcanic eruption; while this one in particular sound a bit far-fetched, Entei do possess unnaturally deep roars that actually generate massive sound waves that are simply too low-frequency for most humans to hear. As it just so happens, there have been several cases where an Entei's roar has generated enough resonance to cause part of a volcano (internally and/or externally) to fail in such a way as to actually trigger a volcanic eruption; it is likely, however, that this is not done on purpose and is merely the product of a coincidence.

While Raikou, Entei and Suicune are the subject of many different tales throughout the world, one of the most note-worthy tales of all revolves around the Tin and Brass Towers of Ecruteak City of the Johto region. 700 years ago, two nine-tier towers were built within Ecruteak City in hopes of fostering friendship and hope between Pokémon and people. The eastern tower, known as Tin Tower (though today it is simply referred to as the Bell Tower), was designed to be a place where Pokémon could awaken and start each day anew; a local Ho-Oh often perched at the top of this tower and considered it to be its permanent nesting ground. The western tower, known as Brass Tower (know referred to as the Burned Tower), was designed to be a place where Pokémon could go to sleep in peace; while reports are a bit hazy on the subject, it is believed that a local Lugia used the tower as its permanent nesting ground. For many generations, peace surrounded the towers and Ecruteak City was a prosperous place…but a bit over 160 years ago, disaster struck. A freak storm generated massive lightning bolts that struck many homes and buildings within the small city, setting them ablaze; one of those buildings was Brass Tower. Although all of the people and most of the Pokémon within the tower were able to escape to safety, three unidentified Pokémon were trapped within the basement of the tower. The blaze lasted for three days before a sudden downpour finally put out the fire, but by then the three trapped Pokémon had been burned alive and reduced to little more than ashes. According to legend, Ho-Oh felt such pity towards the deceased Pokémon that it resurrected them in forms representative of the entire fiasco: The lightning bolt that started the fire (Raikou), the fire itself (Entei) and the rain that finally stopped the blaze (Suicune). Considering that these legendary beasts are seen around the world, it is unlikely that their origins truly took place here; however, all historical records make no indication of any different events, leaving the legend as Ecruteak City's official public record. It is possible, however, that the Ho-Oh modeled the creatures after the legendary beasts that were already present in the wild, which would in turn make this an isolated incident. What is known is that the Ho-Oh that once rested on Tin Tower flew away and has only reappeared on extremely rare occasions; the Lugia believed to live on Brass Tower flew away to an unknown location and has not been seen since, though many believe that it may be living within the depths of the region's Whirl Islands.

It is duly noted that the three legendary beasts were at least partially involved in a second important incident, the Crown City Incident, about seven years ago. According to reports, a businessman by the name of Grings Kodai managed to abduct a Zoroark and its child Zorua, blackmailing the mother Zoroark into attacking the city under the guise of the three legendary beasts (Raikou, Entei and Suicune) that served as Crown City's guardians. Grings had apparently obtained the ability to see the future twenty years prior to this event by touching a time ripple formed by a Celebi, releasing a time reversal in the process that killed all of the plant life in the city; with his powers beginning to fade, however, Grings became desperate and sought to restore them by any means necessary. Learning that the same Celebi had appeared again and produced another time ripple, Grings used the captured Zoroark to 'destroy' the city and, ordering an evacuation of the area, was finally able to search for the ripple freely. However, the child Zorua had managed to escape and found itself in the company of several young trainers and, learning of the poor creature's plight, the trainers decided to help it find its mother. Because almost no one else was present for the majority of the incident, few details are available as to what happened next. In the end, however, Grings' actions twenty years ago were finally exposed to public, resulting in his immediate arrest. It is believed that the young trainers, with the assistance of the Zorua, Zoroark, and the real guardians of Crown City, managed to drive back Grings from the time ripple and, with the help of the Zoroark's illusionary powers, caused Grings to knock himself out while entranced by an illusion. The Celebi that Grings was pursuing was able to time travel out of the area safely, causing the time ripple to disappear. In the aftermath of this incident, the Zorua and Zoroark were returned back to their homeland through the help of some of the locals, and although it is unknown exactly where they are today, it can at least be assumed that they are living in relative peace once again.

Lastly, it is important to note the involvement of an Entei (though it was not a real one) in the infamous Greenfield Incident. Nearly 18 years ago, a local researcher by the name of Professor Spencer Hale had been researching the mysterious Unown when he accidentally got sucked into a pocket dimension containing the strange creatures, leaving in his wake a box of ancient tiles marked with Unown symbols. When his daughter Molly got a hold of the tiles, she mistakenly released the Unown and allowed a small army of them to leave the pocket dimension and enter our world. Feeding off of her imagination, the Unown brought Molly's dreams and fantasies to life, transforming her home and the surrounding hillsides into a terrifying palace of crystal and stone and even going so far as to create a fake Entei under the premise of it representing Molly's protective father in her mind. Unfortunately, the Unown gained too much power in their short stay and began to use Molly's dreams and thoughts uncontrollably and unpredictably, eventually losing control of themselves and becoming a living doomsday device. Thanks to efforts of some traveling kids, as well as the false Entei that had been created to protect Molly, however, the Unown were eventually defeated and returned back to their pocket dimension; in turn, this allowed Professor Hale to return back to our world and reunite with his daughter.

With the fiery power of magma coursing through their veins and an unbridled passion for combat, it can easily be said that Entei are destructive creatures capable of burning everything they see to the ground in a flash. With the highest base HP stat out of all Fire-type Pokémon and a wild temperament that only a Fire-type specialist could control, these magnificent beasts are truly formidable creatures that can easily take just as much punishment as they can dish out. Consider yourself lucky if you ever get to see one of these magnificent beasts and make sure to find a boat immediately afterward if you're near a volcano of any kind; the chances are still pretty slim, but when it comes to risking a volcanic eruption, caution is still the best choice regardless of probability!

I encountered an Entei when I was little. It helped me get back home when I was lost and cold in the forest.
I wonder why it would help a human?
