Galactic Federation Army 07th Platoon

The 07th platoon of the Galactic Federation Army was sent to the BOTTLE SHIP to investigate the seemingly-derelict space station under orders from the Galactic Federation, and alongside the bounty hunter Samus Aran, they were able to uncover a plot to create bioweapons under the jurisdiction of a branch of the Galactic Federation, a highly risky move to pull considering that the Federation sees all bioweaponry as completely and utterly illegal. Led by Commander Adam Malkovich, the team enlisted the help of Samus Aran shortly after arriving on the base in order to deal with a Brug Mass and ultimately allowed her to join as a special ‘reserve’ unit to clear out most of the major monsters in the ship while trying to bring the power back online and reestablish contact with any survivors that may have been left in the station. It was not too long after arriving that Samus came to discover some of the more dangerous bioweapons that had been produced in the station and was forced to track down one in particular (the Mysterious Creature) after it attacked and nearly skewered her with its tail; this monster would later metamorphose into a clone of Ridley and force Samus to overcome her fears of the monster once more.

In the course of her campaign on the BOTTLE SHIP, Samus became aware that one of the members of the 07th Platoon had been sent in as a spy, the “Deleter” as she came to call him, and was slowly killing off the other members and trying to cover up the station to ensure that no word of it and its creations was to ever make it out of the station. As a result, the members of the 07th Platoon were killed off one by one, and as Samus did her best to try and fully uncover the secrets of the BOTTLE SHIP, she became the target of another entity, MB, and was forced to watch as her last human idol, Adam Malkovich, sacrificed himself to give Samus the chance to secure the last surviving human (Madeline Bergman) while he indirectly destroyed the Unfreezable Metroids that had been developed within the facility. In the end, the majority of the 07th Platoon was wiped out completely, including the supposed “Deleter”, but member Anthony Higgs was able to survive the ordeal and made it out of the facility with Samus and Madeline in one piece. The station would later be destroyed to fully cover up and eliminate any trace of what had been going on there, but the corruption would not end there and some of the more gruesome monsters Samus encountered on the station would show up in the B.S.L. Research Station as well during the outbreak of the X-Parasite on the vessel.

07th Platoon Members

Name: Adam Malkovich
Role in 07th Platoon: Commanding Officer
Service Record: Unavailable
Weapon of choice: G.F. Plasma Machine Gun, Freeze Gun, G.F. Assault Rifle retrofitted with Grenade Launcher
Biography: Commander Adam Malkovich is a former member of the Galactic Federation Police and Army after the former was decommissioned and the only commanding officer to ever be in charge of Samus Aran. During Samus’ early days as part of the Galactic Federation Army, she served under Malkovich and held a special relationship with him; though he would often end his reports with the infamous line “Any objections, Lady?”, he did this not as a form of derision but to ensure that the headstrong Samus understood fully what had just been told to her about her mission objective; in response, she would give him a thumbs down to both signify the derision of being called a lady and the fact that she did understand the order. The relationship between the two was somewhat rocky, but Samus still respected Adam a great deal and was willing to follow his orders in nearly any circumstance. However, she broke ties with the Galactic Federation Police after Adam sacrificed the life of his brother, Ian Malkovich, to save the lives of 300 other people. At the time, Samus and Adam were part of the crew of the Galactic Federation Battleship VIXIV while Ian was repairing the drive unit of a commercial transport called the Lusitania; the large device had become detached and malfunctioned during flight, but as Ian was sent over to repair it, the drive unit went critical and threatened to detonate and destroy the crew of the ship. Given the information available from the Operators on the battleship in regards to the critical state of the drive unit, in order to save the passengers, Adam made the tough decision to detach the drive unit and leave his brother to die as the device ultimately exploded far enough from the Lusitania that there were no casualties. Samus questioned his orders and pleaded that Adam give her the chance to go out and save Ian before it was too late, but Adam refused and continued on as he had to. Samus would later realize that the decision was far too difficult for any normal person to have made, and her questioning of Adam’s orders only made the decision that much harder to make. However, at the time, Samus had been rendered so frustrated over the situation that she left the Federation Police after that, becoming a freelance bounty hunter in the process.

Aboard the BOTTLE SHIP, Adam initially acted very cold and hostile towards Samus, but after she gave them the extra firepower they needed to destroy a Brug Mass in the Main Sector of the ship, Adam realized that he and his team were going to need Samus’ help in order to fully explore the ship and deal with whatever else was living inside of it. Samus chose to not use all of her weapon systems at first out of respect for Adam until they were authorized, and while this did make exploring the ship difficult, it was the least thing that she could have done for him in her own mind. With Adam at the control bridge of the ship, he monitored the activity of the rest of the platoon and gave directives for them and Samus to accomplish, though the disruption in the communication systems of the other members of the platoon made it difficult to fully coordinate their efforts and keep track of them. Through the course of Samus’ adventure, Adam guided much of her actions, but things took a turn for the worse after Samus found and started to interact with an individual calling herself Madeline Bergman, the head of the research facility. After encountering her a second time in the Bioweapon Research Center hidden off of Sector 1, Samus was directed to explore Sector 2 and search for Sector Zero, a place where the scientists had supposedly been creating and breeding Metroids; what was left out, however, was the fact that the Metroids had been mutated to make them Unfreezable, and as Adam watched the ‘survivor’ give the details on the issue, he could only run as fast as he could to stop her before she walked straight into a lethal trap.

After entering Sector Zero and starting to interact with an Infant Metroid, she was attacked with a Freeze Gun from behind, which dealt critical damage to her and forced her out of her suit into her Zero Suit; just as the Infant was about to attack her in her weakened state, Adam killed it with another shot from his Freeze Gun. After spending some time trying to wake Samus, Adam told her about the Unfreezable Metroids in Sector Zero and that his report on the dangers of using Metroids as weapons was co-opted by another group, who used his reputation to grant funding for the project and ultimately made their use as bioweapons a reality on the BOTTLE SHIP. In Adam’s eyes, Samus was the only one that had the power to destroy the rampaging Ridley clone (who would later be found dead in the Bioweapon Research Facility, its energy drained by the offspring of the Queen Metroid secretly left there), and the only thing that Adam could do was to lock himself in Sector Zero and deal enough damage to it to get the ship to detach it, leading to the self-destruction of the Sector, himself and the Metroids contained within. With that, Adam ordered Samus to find a final survivor that had been detected in the Bioweapon Research Center, destroy Ridley and find a way to stop the ship, as it was on a crash-course pathway towards Galactic Federation Headquarters. With a final warning not to trust the woman she had encountered earlier, Samus pleaded for him not to end it on these terms, but in the end, she could do nothing but accept his sacrifice. It is now believed that Adam had an idea of the type of work that was going on at the facility even before he arrived (which would explain why he knew about the Unfreezable aspect of the Metroids in Sector Zero) and was thus a huge target for the “Deleter” to take out; it is even suspected that Adam had come face-to-face with the spy at some point and had his comm earphone shot off (the only piece of technology that allowed him to speak directly to Samus), but why the two parted ways after that and why the “Deleter” left on his own accord is still uncertain, though it is possible that the “Deleter” might have had bigger problems to deal with and left Adam alone to pursue more important targets (such as luring Samus to MB in the Bioweapon Research Facility). In the end, Samus was able to return to the BOTTLE SHIP before it was destroyed to retrieve Adam’s helmet from the Control Room and got out just in time to avoid being annihilated with the rest of the station.

Even in death, however, Commander Adam Malkovich was not completely gone from the scene. Shortly after Samus Aran was given the Fusion Suit and sent to the B.S.L. Research Station to take care of the X-Parasite outbreak onboard, her new ship was outfitted with an artificial intelligence unit that served to dictate the orders of the Galactic Federation and ensure that she followed Federation protocol in her actions. Samus named the computer Adam after her deceased former commanding officer, and though she was at odds with at near the end of her journey on the station, he was the only thing that she had to trust. It was not until she was locked in a room to wait for the Galactic Federation to arrive and attempt to capture an SA-X that she accidentally called the machine Adam directly; the computer’s inquiry of curiosity led her to explain that identity and the importance of his name, and after consideration of her words, the computer turned its personality around and sided with Samus over the Galactic Federation’s orders to keep her contained, instructing her to go to the Operations Deck and set the planet on a crash-course with SR388 to kill the X-Parasite population. It seems that, more commonly than most would realize, the Galactic Federation had been using their technology to copy and download the minds of key military officers into their databanks for future use of their knowledge, and the entity that had been assigned to Samus was in fact the replicated mind of the real Adam Malkovich. With his help, Samus was able to alter the trajectory of the ship and escaped as it crashed into SR388, destroying both entities at the same time. With this, Samus, alongside the Etecoons and Dachoras she had rescued from the station, flew off with Adam to parts unknown, leaving the fate of her and the Galactic Federation to the stars to decide upon. For once, now alongside the man she saw as a surrogate father in the absence of the Chozo, Samus was not alone anymore.

Name: Anthony Higgs
Role in 07th Platoon: 2nd in Command, Battle Code Number 103
Service Record: Galactic Federation Academy; Training Base #1; Federation Department of Special Affairs, 3rd Division; Galactic Federation, 07th Platoon; ID: 1898-07:57940
Weapon of choice: G.F. Plasma Machine Gun, Freeze Gun, Plasma Gun
Biography: Anthony Higgs serves as the second-in-command of the 07th Platoon and is armed with both normal Army Trooper weapons and an experimental Plasma Gun, which is supposed to be the Galactic Federation equivalent to the charged Chozo Plasma Beam. Anthony is the only other individual that Samus is familiar with aside from Adam initially in the platoon, as the two were friends during Samus’ time as part of the Federation Army; he even used to call her “Princess” as a nickname, one that seems to have stuck with her all her life. Anthony was the only member of the platoon to be even remotely friendly towards her upon first meeting on the BOTTLE SHIP, and throughout the journey on the station, he would be the only one to really show any degree of compassion for Samus. Anthony was initially sent to explore Sector 3 on his own to explore the volatile Sector and determine if the use of Plasma Guns should be authorized. Eventually, though, he was called into the Biosphere Testing Area of Sector 1 and ordered to scout the Exam Center (though not before remarking how much the area reminded him of the old army training grounds) before helping to save Samus outside from an attack by the Mysterious Creature, the adolescent form of the Ridley clone. Later on, Samus would encounter Anthony once more in Sector 3 and helped him fight off a Rhedogian and some Sovas before he informed her that the team had been called to Sector 3 to open the Magma Eruption Port in the Geothermal Power Plant to restore full power; when no one showed up, though (mainly because most of the other platoon members had been killed) he decided to simply look around. Anthony would eventually end up fighting against Ridley after Samus suffered a moment of PTSD upon seeing her dead foe risen from the grave, but because of the charging issues of the Plasma Gun, he was not able to get in a single shot before Ridley swiped him of the main platform in the plant with his tail, seemingly sending him to his death in the magma pool below.

After defeating the Queen Metroid in the Bioweapon Research Facility, it seemed that the Galactic Federation Army under the command of the Colonel, a being whose purpose and power are unknown but may have hidden connections to what was going on at the facility before MB went on a rampage, was going to successfully try and cover up its operations, but to the shock and surprise of everyone, one of the members of the inflowing squad revealed himself to be none other than Anthony Higgs. It turns out that Anthony had saved himself by using his Freeze Gun on a Magdolite and then leaping off its frozen body to safety. Much to the distaste of the Colonel, Anthony informed him that he had been tasked with securing any and all survivors of the ship on the orders of Commander Malkovich and that the orders were signed and validated by the Chairman of the Galactic Federation. As such, Samus, Anthony and Madeline Bergman were able to leave the station together without the inflowing mass of Federation Army troops getting their hands on Madeline; it is unknown what happened to either Madeline or Anthony after that, but it can likely be assumed that the two are safe and sound and out of the reach of the individual that had planned for the destruction of the BOTTLE SHIP and the reacquisition of the Unfreezable Metroids, though Samus would not be so lucky on the B.S.L. Research Station.

Name: Lyle Smithsonian
Role in 07th Platoon: Special Operations Demolition Expert, Battle Code Number 101
Service Record: Galactic Federation Academy; Training Base #3; Special Ops Training Center; Galactic Federation, 07th Platoon; ID: 2537-07:51290
Weapon of choice: G.F. Plasma Machine Gun, Freeze Gun, Battle Rifle
Biography: Lyle Smithsonian, as the demolition expert of the platoon, knew his way around more than a few obstacles and was known for being the best man for the job if a barrier needed to be removed in a quick and effective fashion. Unfortunately for him, he suffered from entomophobia, and it heavily showed when he encountered a Brug in the Main Sector of the BOTTLE SHIP and killed it with way too many bullets, enraging the Emperor Brug in the room into forming a Bug Mass. Following its defeat, Lyle was assigned to investigate Sector 1 and to try and show a little restraint with his explosives. After the platoon and Samus were ordered to meet in the Exam Center in Sector 1, Lyle never showed up, and the rest of the platoon just assumed that he was late; it was not until looking outside the Exam Center that they found his dead body. It seems that he had been initially killed by the “Deleter” before his body was ravaged and devoured by the creature called “Little Birdie”, which in turn likely facilitated its growth into the adolescent monster known as the Mysterious Creature.

Name: Maurice Favreau
Role in platoon: Military Engineer, Battle Code Number 102
Service Record: Galactic Federation Academy; Training Base #2; Department of Logistics, Resupply Center #4; Galactic Federation, 07th Platoon; ID: 2975-07:67948
Weapon of choice: G.F. Plasma Machine Gun, Freeze Gun
Biography: Maurice Favreau served as the main military engineer of the 07th platoon and was known for always following orders precisely in order to get the job done as quickly as possible and as close to being satisfactory or more among his superiors. Maurice was initially assigned to explore Sector 2 and to repair any damaged equipment that he came across, and when he was called to the Sector 1 Exam Center along with the rest of the platoon, he attempted to recover data from a computer that had somehow “self-destructed”. It was here that the platoon learned of the bioweapon research being conducted on the ship and the name of the individual in charge of operations, Madeline Bergman. In trying to recover more data, he told James that it would be up to him if he came across any security locks that needed to be hacked into, but the resulting data gained from this has never been officially stated or released to the public as the building was destroyed before much of it could be reclaimed. Sometime later on, Samus came across the deceased body of Maurice at the Experimental Floor of Sector 2, killed by the “Deleter” via a point-blank blast from a Freeze Gun to his heart.

Name: K.G. Misawa
Role in 07th Platoon: Recon Scout, Battle Code Number 105
Service Record: Galactic Federation Academy; Training Base #4; Combat Technology Research Center, Section 2; Galactic Federation, 07th Platoon; ID: 2844-07:62103
Weapon of choice: G.F. Plasma Machine Gun, Freeze Gun
Biography: K.G. Misawa served as the main recon scout for the 07th Platoon; despite his short size, Misawa had proven to be an invaluable source of intelligence in the past and was valued as a spy to a great degree, as his smaller stature actually made it a bit easier for him to remain undetected in the shadows. He was initially ordered to scout the Residential Quarters of the BOTTLE SHIP and ended up as part of the events going on at the Sector 1 Exam Center before its destruction, but after that he went missing and his body was never recovered. It is still uncertain what fate befall K.G. on the ship, but it is most likely that he too was killed and disposed of by the “Deleter” during the course of the platoon’s investigation of the station.

Name: James Pierce
Role in 07th Platoon: Communications Expert, Battle Code Number 104
Credentials: Galactic Federation Academy; Training Base #6; Federation Central Information Agency, Intelligence Group 2; Galactic Federation, 07th Platoon; ID: 3721-07:74425
Weapon of choice: G.F. Plasma Machine Gun, Freeze Gun
Biography: James Pierce acted as the communications expert of the platoon and was generally well-liked by his fellow soldiers, though some suspected that he might have had invisible ties to higher officials that were a bit on the unscrupulous side. James was initially ordered to explore the Control Bridge of the Main Sector in order to determine if the issues they were experiencing with their communication devices were due to electrical interference. He was eventually called back to the Sector 1 Exam Center alongside everyone else and managed to power up a damaged computer from which Maurice was able to recover some data on the purpose of the facility, but he vanished from sight shortly after the attack from the Mysterious Creature. Eventually, Samus Aran did find James again, but this time he was in the Bioweapon Research Center and was dead, killed by an unknown entity.

It is now generally understood that the role that James played on the BOTTLE SHIP may have been far more sinister than originally imagined; in particular, it is highly suspected that he was the spy (the “Deleter”) sent in to clean up the BOTTLE SHIP, destroy the 07th Platoon and recover the Unfreezable Metroids for the Federation’s darker groups. However, the unexpected introduction of Samus into the mix likely scrambled his plans and forced him to take a different approach. Three of the platoon’s men met their fate at the end of his weapons and he made it very clear to Samus (though she could not see his face at the time) that he wanted her dead, as he tried to kill her after finding MB in Sector 2 using the RB176 Ferrocrusher only to fail and have the machine permanently disabled. It is possible that he had damaged the main computer in the Exam Center to make sure that only a little bit of the data could be obtained for the platoon’s intelligence purposes, followed by rigging the Exam Center to self-destruct using explosives likely stolen from Lyle, and it is likely that he is the one that not only disabled all communications between the platoon members but also disabled all communications between Samus and Adam by shooting off his comm earphone. Moreover, it is believed that it was he that intentionally led Samus to the Bioweapon Research Center the first time to goad MB into sending Samus into a trap at Sector Zero before ultimately confronting MB directly, thinking that he would be able to kill her easily. Sadly, it seems that his plans backfired completely, as MB either killed him by hand or commanded a Desbrachian to kill him, with the latter option being the more likely one given the large gouges left in his armor (though the fact that the creature went missing afterward suggests that James did not go down without a fight). At the moment, no further investigation is being made to determine what links James might have had with other members of the Galactic Federation and the Colonel has yet to be questioned on any connections he might have had to the station, but it seems likely that this story of corruption is not the first of its kind and may stretch back many years prior to the end of Zebes and the Metroids in the natural wild, though just how far back and to what extent is still uncertain.
