Gex: A ReRun of Fallen Glory
Chapter 9: This is the Bottom Line

After that little jaunt into madness, I was both intrigued and weirded out by some of the things I had seen. Granted, it’s not like I haven’t seen anything that I couldn’t have expected, but I will say that this manic, ReRun, was turning out to be decent villain material…so far.

As I entered the Hub World once again, I noticed immediately that something was wrong. The bright colors around me had faded, and it seemed darker than it had been. There was a rumble in the ground originating from the central area where I had first arrived here, and as I approached it, I could see a lot of smoke in the air and there were thick plumes of the material spurting out of the ground. I watched as a huge television rose out of the ground like an obelisk, shaking and cracking the floor from which it was arising from.

-I must admit Gex, you have been doing an excellent job playing through both old and new challenges here alike. Sadly, I’m still not fully convinced that you are the fighter that you once were. As such, I am going to provide you with a test unlike anything you have faced thus far. There is an old enemy from Rez’s army that was begging me to let loose on you. Normally, I do not grant requests to those that rudely interrupt me when I’m listening to Lady Gaga, but he was so eager to prove himself that I decided to give him the chance he wanted. I think that your reunion will be quite memorable to see; good luck, boy.-

The television set suddenly turned on and blasted a bright light in my face. Printed on its face was a portal to a place that I didn’t think I was actually ever going to see again. It was WWGex Wrestling, which only meant one thing. I raised up my tail, cracked my knuckles, and dove straight in ready to kick some butt.

When I entered on the other side, I was ready for a fight, my luchador outfit gripping to my skin like the spandex body-choker it was (which I was okay with, given the situation).

I was in a wrestling ring, and a fake audience cheered on in the background…well, not for me. They were booing at me. They were cheering for the huge muscle-bound monster approaching me.

‘Well look who we have here! The pipsqueak gecko himself!’

Rock Hard. One of the reject generals of Rez’s old army from 16 years ago. I couldn’t imagine what ReRun was thinking sending this chump my way, but I guess he thought that I was still so far from my golden days that even this meathead had a chance of taking me down. Boy, was he wrong.

“What a shame. I honestly thought that ReRun had better tastes, but I guess he isn’t so different from Rez after all.”

‘You watch what you say!’

What? I was taken aback for a moment. Did that loser just respond to me?

‘ReRun is the greatest! He gave me a chance to take you out again, and I don’t plan on letting him down. It doesn’t matter what you think!’

“You know what? I’m gonna’ to stop you right there. Obviously I hit you too hard on the head, because you don’t seem to remember the thrashing I gave you last time.”

‘Bah! You’re washed up, gecko. I, on the other hand, am feeling fresh and ready to squash you like a bug!’

The crowd cheered in response.

‘Yeah, you like that! You can smell what Rock Hard is cooking, right!? Yeah, let’s get it on!’

Well, he was certainly more enthusiastic and intelligent from before, but this guy was nothing but a pushover before, so he couldn’t be that much of a problem…

I didn’t get to finish that thought before a huge fist slammed into my face and sent me sprawling into the other corner of the ring. I didn’t even get the chance to see him before he hit me. That was not the best way to start things off. I picked myself up and dusted off my spandex, and ran straight towards him at full speed. I tried to Tail Kick him in the face, but he just grabbed my tail, swung me around like a lasso and hurled me back into the corner again. This was definitely not a good way to start this kind of a fight. What was going on? He was never this strong before…

‘Ya’ like that? You see, that’s the great thing about ReRun. He doesn’t just give you a second chance; he gives you more power to make sure you don’t fail a second time!’

“Yeah, I noticed.”

Alright, now I was getting pissed. So this ugly reject wasn’t the same pushover he had bene before; big deal. He was still nothing. I knew that I could take him down.

I ran straight for him and he did the same, twirling his fists around like a freakin’ tornado. I dodged out of the way just in time, but he was too far away to initiate a counterattack. Not that it would have mattered anyways; the moment he stopped his twirling little dance, he flung himself high in the air and came crashing back down to earth. I barely got away in time, but he seemed a bit stunned after using that move, so I used the opportunity to lay into him. He got up pretty quickly, but I could see that I had done some damage.

“Ha! Not so high and mighty are you now, huh?”

That only enraged him further, and was probably not a good idea in hindsight. He started throwing punches that took him clear to the other side of the ring, and every time he did that twirling fist-dance, I had to run in place just to escape the vacuum effect it had. The only time that loser ever stopped moving was after trying to slam his butt on top of me, and even then he didn’t stay down too long.

The more that I tried to hurt this thing, the more dangerous and voracious he became. I wasn’t used to this…this was an opponent with some actual power to it. I hit him over and over again, and it just didn’t seem like it was enough to keep him down.

I was starting to feel exhausted. If it hadn’t bene apparent before, it definitely was now: I was not in the shape that I really should have been for this kind of a fight. I was still stuck in the present, with no job, no life, and no one to rely on. It was hopeless…I just should have…

I stopped thinking for a moment. What the hell was wrong with me? I’m GEX! I eat this crap for breakfast! This is my world! And I wasn’t going to let some reject wrestler ruin my day!

I had been lying on the mat after getting slammed by his ugly fist again, but I didn’t just get back up on my feet. No, I leaped up off my back and put both feet on the ground, dashing toward him with all the vigor and fight I had left in me. I had taken quite a beating, and so had he, but I wasn’t going to let on anymore just how hurt I was.

This was no longer the time to simply take the blows. It was Tail-Time.

He swung at me with a right hook, and I weaved out of the way and slammed my tail across the back of his head. He stumbled for a bit, and I immediately used my tail to sweep his legs out from under him, forcing him to the floor with a loud thud. I gave a bit of the old one-two and Tail Bounced his head as much as I could, but it wasn’t enough. No matter what I tried, he just wouldn’t fall! I needed to end him, but how?

Then, an idea popped into my head. If he was so find of slamming his massive body down onto me to try and squash me, who was to say that I couldn’t do the same thing to him? Maybe an old dog could learn new tricks after all!

I waited for him to get back to his feet, watched as he leapt into the air a final time, and dodged out of the way as soon as he began to descend. I rushed him and wrapped my tail around his head, blinding him. He got up and creamed, trying to wrench me off of his head, but it wasn’t working; I didn’t have any plans at all to let go of this submission. Eventually, he was forced to his knees, and he started to fade out of consciousness (which I still don’t understand; why would ReRun’s power actually make him vulnerable to something that would only work in the real world?). In one last desperate struggle, he forced himself back to his feet and swung his head back so sharply that I lost my grip and was sent flying into the air above him.

This was the moment I had been waiting for. With all of the strength left in me, I flipped my body 360 degrees with my tail pointed horizontally below me and slammed it into his skull dead-center. A somewhat quiet but audible cracking noise issued from his head, and as I fell off his back and lay in a sprawled heap, he just stood there…hovering for a few brief moments…before crashing down face-first. I watched as his body took on a bright glow before dissolving in a flash of static.

I hoisted myself up and leaned against the ring posts. The crowd had stopped cheering and was doing nothing but booing me. But I didn’t care. I climbed up on a ring post, lifted my hands in the air, and screamed at the top of my lungs in victory. I felt like a kid again! I felt a bit of that old Gex in me! The booing was music to my ears, and I didn’t want it to end. With the help of an improvised move, which I lovingly decided to call a Tail Slam, I had finally felled ReRun’s best attempt to defeat me so far. I even started performing some jumps off the top rope just for the fun of it.

Maybe I wasn’t so washed up after all. Maybe the wise-cracking, smart-mouthed gecko I used to be was still somewhere inside of me. At the time, I could only say a single thing in response to this victory:

“And that’s the bottom line, cuz’ Gex just said so!”

The world around me began to dissolve, and as it faded to black, I could still hear the booing of the crowd beyond me...

When I was ejected from the television set, I watched as the actual television itself begin to smoke and spark, before suddenly shutting off and vanishing back down into the floor it has come from. And, as I expected, there was someone waiting for me on the outside.

-Hmmmm……well, this certainly will not do. Despite my attempt to not replicate my predecessor’s failures, it seems that I too have underestimated you Gex. Hehehehe…hahahaha…ehehahahaha! Excellent! Wonderful! You just may actually be the gecko they say you are! Spectacular! I can’t wait to see how you handle the next set of challenges awaiting you!-

On the opposite side of the room, more clouds of smoke and sparks began to appear, and a strange tube rose from the ground. A teleporter, I would imagine…which meant that there was more than one of these Hub Worlds. I sort of figured that, but for all of that just to be present in one place…I could only wonder how many of these hoops I was going to have to jump through, but for once, I was feeling ready for it.

“Yeah, well I hope that you can come up with better obstacles than what was present here! I was practically falling asleep in there! Catch you on the flipside, loser!”

I stepped into that teleporter, and as I felt energy coursing around me, I wondered if maybe this was what I needed. I had been living a pretty pointless life up until this point, but now I finally had something that made me feel special again. A place where someone of my talents really belonged. I didn’t know if my body was still able to put up the same amount of fight as it had in the past, but I was ready to see if that was the case.

The world around me faded, and I felt myself being shot out into the depths of the Neo Media Dimension, with a grin plastered on my face the whole time.
This is the tenth chapter of my proposed story/story-line for my idea of a new Gex game. I am planning to invest a lot of time and energy into this project, and I can only hope that it will be justified in light of the work that I am more well-known for.

Here, Gex finally comes face-to-face with the guardian in charge of the New World Hub, a meat-head from the past looking to put the hurt on him.
