Gex: Abilities and Powers

Gex has been the sole fighter keeping Rez at bay from controlling the world through television, but as it turns out, his life was at a highpoint while he was fighting that diabolical monster. With Rez destroyed in the late 1990’s, Gex actually found himself out of a job, as his ‘expert skills’ were really of little use outside of the Media Dimension. Destitute, Gex has been slowly eating away his enormous cash funds and has done little with his life since, though he tries to keep himself healthy to some degree or another. Bitter with resentment, Gex is reluctant to do anything when he receives a call from the U.S. government asking for his help, but upon hearing that it has something to do with the Media Dimension, his interest is piqued. There is a new villain on the block, and he aims even higher than Rez in his endeavors. While Rez merely wanted to control the world through his Media Dimension empire, this new villain, ReRun, aims to MERGE the real world and his empire, the Neo Media Dimension, under the banner of creating harmony between the worlds. Naturally, those in charge of the government don’t buy it, and they want Gex to go in and stop him because he is the only one that has intimate knowledge of how this strange universe even works. Gex declines the offer and hangs up, feeling that no price is worth trying to relive those times again only to feel the agony of regret. His phone rings again, but it is not the government this time: It is ReRun. He taunts Gex a bit before inviting him to take a look at his new world, highly interested to meet him in person and see if he is still the same gecko that gave his predecessor such a hard time. Confused about this strange call and the ever-so-slightly-homoerotic wording of this new adversary, Gex calls up an old friend and decides to give it a try. Little does he know that this adventure may very well be his last, and the last ever known by the real world…

Moves

Since his last adventure in the Media Dimension, Gex hasn’t had a lot of time to keep himself active and his skills are a bit on the rusty side when he starts on his new adventure in the Neo Media Dimension, but it shouldn’t take too long for him to get used to tail whipping everything in sight once again. In addition, he brings a few new moves to this adventure that he can learn after defeating certain bosses that are sure to make his journey more interesting, and he will need them if he wishes to get through the Neo Media Dimension in one piece.

Jump: Gex might be a gecko, but he can jump surprisingly high by pressing [Command Button Undetermined] and can use his feet to reach platforms and cross small voids with little trouble.

Duck: By holding down [Command Button Undetermined], Gex can duck in order to avoid incoming projectiles and other objects.

Tail Whip: This is Gex’s primary means of offense in any battle situation and is executed by pressing the [Command Button Undetermined]. A single whack of his tail might not seem that powerful, but as a creature from the real world injected into the Neo Media Dimension, his physical nature makes his attacks extremely damaging to the non-real bodies of enemies and in turn a potent weapon in battle despite its simplicity.

Tail Bounce: By pointing his tail downward in a spring shape while coming down from a Jump (by pressing the Jump button twice and then holding it), Gex can effectively double the height of his Jump and damage any enemy that he manages to land on. While this move does not allow the same horizontal movement as seen in a standard Jump, it is the easiest way to damage enemies from above and can even be used by Gex to hop along enemies to reach areas that are otherwise off-access to him.

Tail Kick: Thanks in part to the karate skills he picked up in his heydays, Gex can run in a straight line and launch himself over long distances with a potent karate kick by pressing the [Command Button Undetermined] while holding the [Command Button Undetermined], using his tail as the substitute for an actual foot. Aside from packing a bit more of a punch that a normal Tail Whip attack, this move allows Gex to travel across considerable horizontal distances and cross voids that would otherwise not be traversable. The only downside that comes with this move is that it cannot be stopped once in action and Gex has no way of moving laterally once he has launched himself.

Tongue Lash: This move, executed by pressing the [Command Button Undetermined], has no effect in combat on its own, but it is the only way Gex can eat Power-Up Flies that may be buzzing around his head.

Wall Climb: If the surface of a rock wall or other structure is smooth and imbedded with a special texture, it is possible for Gex to stick to these surfaces and move up sheer faces to reach hidden areas and traverse extremely dangerous environments. While this move can allow Gex to move freely and even Tail Whip enemies that may be nearby, it is noted that taking damage on a wall will force Gex to release his grip and fall back down to the ground or into oblivion if there is no ground beneath him.

Projectile Spit: If Gex has eaten a Power-Up Fly that allows him to spit projectiles, he will do so with the same button that executes his Tongue Lash move.

Tail Slam: This is a special move that can be acquired by defeating Neo Rock Hard. If the [Command Button Undetermined] is pressed while Gex is performing a Tail Bounce, he will slam into the ground with his tail at full force. This attack can deal moderate damage to an enemy, but its more important function is allowing Gex to trigger large switches and other derives that his small body would otherwise be unable to activate.

Tail Swing: This is a special move that can be acquired by defeating the Behemoth Blob. When Jumping near special objects or poles, this move can automatically allow Gex to use his tail like a rope to swing across large voids, though he will be unable to attack or defend himself when using this move.

Zoom Projectile Aiming: This is a special move that can be acquired by defeating Neo MooShoo Pork. When in possession of a Power-Up that allows Gex to spit a projectile, pressing the [Command button Undetermined] will allow him to not only freely aim his shot but even get a close look at targets from a distance, increasing the strategic value of such Power-Ups considerably.

Quick Dodge: This is a special move that can be acquired by defeating the Omega Assassin. If Gex is about to be hit by an attack, pressing [Command Button Undetermined] will enable him to move quickly out of the way, avoiding the attack entirely.

Cyclone Tail Whip: This is a special move that can be acquired by defeating Main Brain. If Gex holds down the [Command Button Undetermined] to use his Tail Whip attack, he can start spinning around rapidly until he turns into a whirling dervish of destruction for a short period of time. While it has no environmental function on its own, it can easily help scatter large groups of enemies, though Gex will be left dizzy and idle for a few moments after it is used.

Power-Up TVs

Scattered throughout the Neo Media Dimension are television sets that contain Power-Up Flies that can grant Gex different powers and items when eaten. Each of these powers is color-coded so it is easier to see what type of Power-Up Gex will get, and all he has to do to get them is hit the TV sets with one of his attacks. The fly will buzz around his head until he decides to eat it using his Tongue Lash move. If Gex gets hit while a fly is buzzing around his head, the fly will take the hit for Gex and leave him unharmed, but he will lose the chance to eat that fly and acquire whatever Power-Up it could have granted him.

Dark Green Fly: When eaten, this fly will allow Gex to recover a single hit paw of health.

Purple Fly: When eaten, this rare fly will grant Gex an extra life.

Red Fly: When eaten, this fly will allow Gex to spit fireballs for a short period of time. These projectiles can easily singe and destroy enemies, especially if they are weak to fire, and can even be used to burn and melt some structures.

Blue Fly: When eaten, this fly will allow Gex to spit iceballs for a short period of time. These projectiles will not hurt enemies directly (unless they are on fire or are otherwise only vulnerable to these icy projectiles), but it will freeze them solid in a cube of ice and turn them into a handy platform that Gex can stand on.

Yellow Fly: When eaten, this fly will allow Gex to spit streams of electricity for a short period of time. These bursts of electricity have the power to heavily damage mechanical enemies and can stun most normal enemies, halting their movement completely. In addition, these projectiles have the potential to power up electrical devices that are otherwise disabled.

Light Green Fly: When eaten, this fly will allow Gex to move at twice his normal speed for a short period of time.

Black Fly: When eaten, this fly will grant Gex complete invulnerability to damage from both enemies and environmental hazards for a short period of time.

White Fly: When eaten, this fly will make Gex invisible for a short period of time, allowing him to sneak past enemies and security cameras with ease.

Costumes

As anyone that knows Gex would say, the costume makes the gecko, and in Gex’s case that works both figuratively and literally. In most stages and Hub Worlds, Gex will don a special outfit that will give him a unique appearance that is perfectly suited for that given area. Most of his costumes are nothing more than aesthetic changes, but a few of them will grant him special powers and will always be integrated into the world it is associated with it, meaning that its special powers will definitely be needed in order to complete the given level.

This is a part of a video game idea for the Gex series entitled "Gex: A ReRun of Fallen Glory". I have created this project in light of not only being a huge fan of the series but also after learning of the news that Square Enix has openly made the IP of the series open to developers. I am no developer myself (though I would DEFINITELY like to be able to make that happen if it means making something serious out of this work), but I suppose this is my attempt at putting together what could be called a video game story-line. I have no idea how far this project is even going to go, but I see it as a test of my creative skills and it may be the most thought-provoking and involved attempt at making an original story that I have ever undertaken. I can only hope that this project will give me a taste of creating original stories and in turn open up my writing skills to new genres of writing that I have otherwise had little experience in.

This particular piece contains background data on Gex for the project as well as a listing and description of his various moves, powers and special costumes.

Have to wonder if Square-Enix would allow references to their other games. I mean way before they acquired Eidos I once had the mental image of Gex with Cloud's signature hairstyle for a RPG themed world. XD
