Nidoran♂ (the Poison Pin Pokémon) is a common Poison-type Pokémon found among grassy plains and forests within the Kanto, Johto, Kalos and Galar regions as well as the Sinnoh and Unova regions on rare occasions. Though relatively small and seemingly defenseless, Nidoran♂ are vicious little creatures that can certainly deliver a nasty flesh wound if approached without caution. If you're into breeding and would like to be able to raise a powerful Pokémon from an Egg, though, you might as well look elsewhere because the moment these beasts evolve, you can forget about them naturally mating with just about anything you throw at them!

The Nidoran family is an exceptionally odd case in that the male and female sides of the family take completely different evolutionary pathways and are actually normally incapable of breeding in captivity. As it turns out, the Nidoran family represents the most extreme example of sexual dimorphism within the Pokémon world and is differentiated in sex not only by their appearances but also their anatomy and physical structure as well as their utilizable moves and overall personalities in the wild. Female Nidoran tend to take the path of defenders and are usually quiet creatures that prefer only to attack when they absolutely have to; as a result, their list of attacks is designed to utilize their claws and teeth to their utmost and exclusively learn the Growl, Scratch, Tail Whip, Fury Swipes, Bite and Crunch moves. Male Nidoran, on the other hand, are aggressive creatures that enjoy attacking anything and everything that dares to approach them; as a result, they prefer to utilize moves that allow them to use the full power of their large horn right from the get-go and thus exclusively learn the Leer, Peck, Focus Energy, Fury Attack, Horn Attack and Poison Jab moves instead. Both of these personality differences will be further exacerbated once they manage to evolve into their adult forms, but what makes these creatures odd is that they become unable to normally reproduce at all with any other creature after evolution…or at least, not under regular means. It seems that, at one time, Nidoran populations within the Kanto and Johto regions were so immense that the creatures had to adapt in such a way as to keep their population numbers down; biologically, this eventually led the females to shut down their reproductive capabilities completely within their evolved forms and therefore made it easier for them to control their own populations. This has not completely removed their natural instincts, however, as both Nidoqueen and Nidoking have a mating season and will take care of eggs when needed; the only difference is that they are never their own eggs and any interaction they have with each other is pointless in terms of propagating their families.

Despite their small size, Nidoran♂ are far more offensively dangerous than Nidoran♀ and are most noted for the large central horn located on their foreheads. Unlike Nidoran♀, Nidoran♂ are both vey cautious and extremely aggressive when they feel threatened or otherwise feel that a mate of theirs is in danger and will take on anything that dares to approach them or even enter their line of sight without their permission, making them far more dangerous to tackle in the wild under any circumstance. The horn on the center of their foreheads, although only slightly longer than the barbs that dot the surface of their counterpart's hide, is filled to the very tip with venom and is designed to release its contents the moment it impacts another object hard, making anything without an exceptionally thick hide or armor vulnerable to a lethal poisoning. Trainers can usually tell from careful observation just how much of a threat one of these beasts might be in regards to their toxins, as there seems to be a positive correlation between the strength of the venom in their central horn and the length of the barbs adorning their hides. In order to keep their otherwise vulnerable bodies safe, Nidoran♂ have developed special muscles at the base of their ears that enable them to move and rotate their ears to an exceptional degree; in combination with their already astounding hearing, this means that these beasts can effectively detect any motion within nearly a quarter of a mile and are able to pick up on the activity of a predator long before they predator sees them. This can make Nidoran♂ a bit more difficult to actually find in the wild in some cases, but in combination with their aggressive nature, this defensive measure is evenly counteracted and made relatively pointless in many cases.

Although they might not be quite as defensively strong as their female counterpart, Nidoran♂ are vicious little creatures that will gladly take on opponents of all shapes and sizes regardless of whatever disadvantage they might have. They may only get a few truly offensive moves within their relatively short lifetimes, but as long as you don't mind battling with them a bit, getting around this issue shouldn't be much of a problem.  If anything else, at least it won't take them that long before they evolve; after that, though, you'll probably be better off carrying a couple of Antidotes with you at all times just in case you accidentally end up disagreeing with their battle decisions afterwards!
