Riolu (the Emanation Pokémon) is a rare Fighting-type Pokémon found among grassy fields and mountainous terrain within the Sinnoh, Unova and Kalos regions. Though they might be unable to harness the power of aura like their evolved form, Riolu are powerful creatures that can certainly put up one heck of a fight despite their small size. Besides, if you are among the few humans alive that can actually read auras, then starting out with one of these little creatures might not be a bad choice; at least that way you'll be able to teach them instead of the other way around!

Although they are still quite young, Riolu have the innate ability to see and interpret the aura given off by life forms and will use this more often than their normal eyesight to see the world around them. In particular, Riolu are able to see the emotions given off by others in the form of aura waves which, oddly enough, actually consist of the electromagnetic waves given off by the brains of other life forms. It is unknown exactly why Riolu have this special ability at such a young age let alone at all, but it is likely that this was originally their way of avoiding predators, something that has unfortunately not proven to be extremely successful as evident by their low population numbers in the wild. Moreover, this ability to read auras is unfortunately limited to just that; Riolu are usually unable to actually utilize their aura in any direct way, in turn severely limiting their ability to utilize any sort of special attacks naturally (in particular the Aura Sphere attack, which is iconic among Lucario). Even so, Riolu are still able to communicate to a limited degree with their auras, as the strength of their aura will increase noticeably whenever they become fearful or sad, signaling others to join them in order to cheer them up or provide extra protection.

Despite their small size and limited degree of aura control, Riolu are lithe yet powerful creatures that can function in battle and on the run for extended periods of time and have more than enough energy within them to crest three mountains and cross two canyons within a single night. This is duly reflected in their combat abilities, as their effective lack of special attacks forces them to utilize their speed and surprising physical strength to deal maximum damage at close range. Not surprisingly, this also means that Riolu have access to several moves that their evolved from, Lucario, do not, as they are more dependent upon surviving conflicts in the wild than they actually winning them; these moves include the Endure, Force Palm, Reversal, Screech, Copycat, Nasty Plot (likely a technique designed to assist them after evolution) and Final Gambit moves. These moves are quite effective at allowing Riolu to survive combat for an extended period of time before either striking back with catastrophic damage or avoiding battle altogether by any means necessary. After evolution, these creatures will become far more direct about their tactics and will become accustomed to fighting opponents head-on.

Though their abilities might be limited in their current form, Riolu are cute but mighty little creatures that can put up more than just a fight against most opponents with little difficulty. You might have to get to know them fairly well and wait until daytime for them to evolve, but if you have the time and patience, they are an investment more than worth making in the long run. After all, it's not like there are a lot of creatures out there that can naturally read the auras of other organisms, a trait that you will soon find to be quite useful in battle!

Someone recently traded me a female one of these that has the ability Prankster. That also has Bullet Punch. If I set up an entry hazard like Stealth Rock up...would it be a good idea to use Roar/Copycat to screw with people? If not, what do you recommend as a move set?

It really depends on what you are looking for. Riolu and Lucario are not usually used for trick ploys, but if you could make it work, I would love to see what use you can make of such a strategy.

Indeed. Set up Stealth Rock and then if Gigalith gets KO'ed, send out Lucario and use Roar to force the opponent to switch out (although, Prankster Riolu's ability changes to Justified when they evolve, which is disappointing) and then...use Copycat and Copycat and Copycat and Copycat and Copycat...and watch as the opposing team gets damaged repeatedly by Stealth Rock!

I suppose that could work...though you will be in trouble when it eventually runs out of PP for Roar.

I've recently encountered another Riolu.... this one in Unova....

And she doesnt seem to really trust humans at all... I've been able to learn what I can from her aura, and it isn't a pretty sight. I've been doing what I can for her, but I've been having little success.

Its usually easy for me to connect with a pokemon, whether its mine, someone else's, or just a wild... but this one seems shut out to me...

I see...that really is a shame; I'm sorry to hear that. Sometimes the trauma that humans inflict on the wild can be more than anyone can handle, even long after it happens...

I don't think she was a wild... I think she ran away. And I think it may had been more than just a human... this Riolu knows Circle Throw, and I could see a hulking figure... I could just make out 3 colors: red, white, and black. My best guess is that the ones who caused her so much pain were the human who raised her... and her father, a Throh. I think I can say without a doubt, that she's suffered more than my Blaziken, Joey, did as a Torchic with his former trainer

I know she hates me for capturing her, but I couldn't leave her injured like that. Her body is healing, but I honestly don't know how much I can do to help her heal from the emotional trauma she's suffered through... or if she'll even let me....

I see...that certainly is sorrowful...

I guess all that one can do is do everything possible to make her comfortable and hope that time will heal her wounds...

I've been staying with her and doing what I can for her, I've even given her a nickname... Relena...

She keeps her guard up constantly, she even blasted me with a Force Palm despite the fact she was still recovering. Yet strangely enough, I've been having more dreams about Relena and the hardships she's suffered through. As a pokemon trainer... no, as a member of the human race... I feel nothing less than rage at what I've seen.

I know she hates me capturing her... but I think she really is asking for help. I'm thinking that maybe Relena understands I'm trying to help her

I want to find this man and his Throh... and I want to make them both pay for what they've done

Found him... :angered: :furious:

Excadrill, Drill Run!
Golurk Shadow Punch!
Volcarona, Flamethrower!
Samurott, Razor Shell!
Sigilyth, Air Slash!
Salamance, Dragon Pulse!

All joking aside, we found the bastard and I had to rescue Relena from him and his Throh. We also found several other Pokemon that needed help

Amongst all the chaos, his Zweilous evolved into Hydreigon and the Shellgon I've been raising evolved into Salamance. Taking his and my battle into the sky...

Salamance, Golurk, Sigilyph, and I pursued him and defeated Hydreigon. Officer Jenny took him into custody and he is being charged with assault, kidnapping, destruction of private and public property, and numerous counts of pokemon abuse. Jenny assured all of us that he's going to pay and that he is going to be locked in a cage for a very, very, very long time

Hmm...Considering that aura reading allows them to know exactly where a foe is, does that give them a sort of natural, constant Foresight or Miracle Eye attack?

Not really; it just makes it easier for them to feel and detect their opponents in battle.

I have your answer....In fact you outlined it!
Lucario have the ability to sense aura for miles, and Riolu can sense emotions through the same way.... That might answer the reason why Poachers are less likely to find a Riolu.
Both are effective survivalists, which would in theory mean they could hide extremely well.

I Hope I did well.....:fingerscrossed:

You're probably correct. To be quite honest, I haven't made any corrections to my older reports since I first wrote them, so they are relatively incomplete. Once I finally write a report on every single species, though, I will be sure to update all of my reports. :)

In fact, I think the reason why they're so rare is because of the fact that only 1/8 of them are female. And since Riolu are unable to breed until they evolve, that give a even smaller chance to increase the population.
