Storage Vessels

Transporting good of rare value or that are otherwise cumbersome to carry can be a problem, which is why most races have come to create and use special storage crates in order to keep ammo and energy reserves, among other things, outside of the direct reach of others. The design of these containers varies considerably deepening upon where they originate and what manner of creature constructed them, but they are all nonetheless alike in that they are usually incapable of taking much in the way of damage and can be broken with the right weapons in order to reveal the good stored inside, if there are any.

Metal Crate: These objects are exactly what they sound like, crude metal crates that are used to transport goods from one location to another. They are common to see in older Space Pirate bases before they started to produce more effective storage containers and are readily destroyed with beam weapons (with the amount of damage they can sustain being dependent upon their size), though some cases may contain volatile energy supplies and can thus be relatively explosive if destroyed with non-physical weapons.

Xenome Containment Unit: These glass containment units are generally used by Space Pirates in order to contain Metroids and similar life forms. The glass itself is brittle and can be shattered with the concussive force of a Missile, but doing so will also release the creature inside, which may or may not be a good idea. These basic devices were mainly used in Phendrana Drift’s Glacier One research facility on Tallon IV where the cold helped to render the Metroids under their control docile, as did the energy shields that lined the inside of the container. If the internal energy shield is deactivated, however, it is quite likely that they will try to break out and have the strength needed to do so, even if they are made a bit sluggish by the cold. A similar type of device called the Cryosleep Tank was also used at the Space Pirates’ Phazon Mines facility in order to contain Elite Pirates that were being kept in stasis to preserve food resources, but even though they were large enough to contain the creatures and retain a relatively strong infrastructure from being used as storage pods for fuel containment prior to conversion, they were easy to destroy with incredible physical force and were thus readily broken by the Elite Pirates contained within if they unexpectedly awoke from stasis. Later models of this containment unit would be utilized by Space Pirates on Aether with an improved design that makes them invulnerable to attack on the outside, but they are not as heavily reinforced on the inside and can thus be broken by a Metroid once the internal energy shield is disabled. Even more advanced models were used by the Phazon Space Pirates to act as protective coverings over energy routers in the South Jungle Hall of Bryyo and a Ship Missile Expansion in the Processing Access room of the Pirate Homeworld. These containment units were built to be more like a Zebetite in terms of durability to a minor extent as they required more than one strike to break from beam (for the former) and Missile (for the latter) weapon systems, with the size of the shields shrinking with every direct hit until dissipating completely after three direct hits.

Galactic Federation Crates: These storage crates are built and used by the Galactic Federation in order to store basic supplies like ammunition and energy capsules. They are very difficult to get into normally as a result of the complex lock systems used to seal them, so force is usually needed in order to open them up; normal crates are lightly armored and can be destroyed with basic weapons, but the Heavy Galactic Federation Crate is much larger and sturdier and can only be destroyed with charged beam shots and Missiles. Federation Force Crates are very similar to the standard Galactic Federation Crate in their structure and function and are primarily designed for storing materials for Federation Force Mechs; though they are a bit sturdier than their regular counterpart, they can still be easily blasted apart by any type of Federation Force Mech weaponry. The Galactic Federation Ordinance Crate is a rare crate marked with a special yellow energy field designed to make it impossible to hack into, though a charged beam shot can still destroy it. These special crates are generally used to protect extremely powerful and valuable weapon systems and are rarely accessible to non G.F. troopers without the use of heavy firepower. Lastly, Secure Galactic Federation Crates and Heavy Transport Crates (which are effectively identical and are only differentiated structurally by the former being designed for lighter, valuable commodities and the latter for heavier materials) are very large and rectangular in form and are used to transport bulk goods across vast distances in both space and on land. Being constructed out of the strongest metals available in the galaxy, they are nigh indestructible and impossible to damage with conventional weapons, and their mass is so great that they must be moved on automated winches as no number of human hands can hope to budge the massive objects.

Luminoth Storage Device: These storage creates are used by the Luminoth in the Temple Grounds to store minor valuables in, though their use declined sharply with the invasion of the Ing. They are bulbous in shape with a tapered point at the top and a base made of six legs arranged in a circle, constructed out of natural woody materials woven into a container shape. These pods are surprisingly strong and can withstand more punishment than some of the life forms native to the planet, but sustained fire from basic beam weaponry can still destroy them.

Agon Bearerpod: These living storage crates were constructed by the Luminoth as an attempt to find harmony in nature while trying to help the barren desert of Agon Wastes recover. This bioengineered plant form consists of a rounded, translucent body with a small base and a series of fleshy spines of the same color and transparency adorning its entire form. These plants can gather trace amounts of moisture from the air and store it in a number of chambers in their body, holding and processing the water for weeks if needed before a direct source of water is applied to them. Their thick epidermis is sturdy enough to repel most minor creatures, but sustain fire can still cause their form to rupture and reveal the item contained within.

Torvus Hanging Pod: These bioengineered pods are made to grow around objects as they form their fruit, which looks like a bulbous, red biomass coated in a brown epidermis. These fruits can hang from their respective parent plant for many weeks on end and are usually difficult for most creature to get at, but a few shots from a basic weapon can easily dislodge them from their roost. Most of these pods were raided by the Luminoth during their early skirmishes with the Ing, but a few can still be found that may have some items left in them from the war.

Torvus Bearerpod: This strange plant possesses a thick, green plant base with red organs on its sides that are filled with an acidic gas. The Luminoth bioengineered these creature to grow up and around items for storage and are perfectly adapted for Torvus Bog, as they are resistant to the harsh chemicals and diseases that run rampant in the swamp. While they have no direct way of protecting themselves against attack and can be ruptured with a bit of sustained firepower, most creatures prefer to stay away from them and avoid eating them as the red nodules on the outside will readily release their acidic gas when they burst and can damage armor and kill small life forms with this gas alone.

Luminoth Tech Crate: These storage devices were designed for use in the Sanctuary Fortress and consist of little more than basic, red storage cubes that possess an incredibly complicated locking system known only to the Luminoth. As such, it is difficult to open these crates manually, but they can easily be destroyed with sustained gunfire.

Bladepod: This creature is not a real storage pod at all but a type of Ing of low rank that is forced to act as a living storage unit for use by the rest of its kind and their darklings in the Sky Temple Grounds and Dark Agon Wastes. The Bladepod gets its name from its blade-like form that sticks out of the ground with only a weak root base attaching them to said surface, a sole red eye adorning their outer frame. These creature may look strange, but they can still be destroyed just as easily as other storage pods and can be easily disposed of with light-based weaponry.

Ingsphere Cache: This creature is not a real storage pod at all but a type of Ing of low rank that is forced to act as a living storage unit for use by the rest of its kind and their darklings in Dark Torvus Bog. These creatures have a thin, dark base that they stand on and a more bulbous main body that has a transparent shield covering its internal tissues and a series of filaments on the top that move back and forth slowly, allowing the creatures to feed on the dark energy of their native land. They store their goods in a dimensional pocket that is designed to only be accessible to the Ing, but sustained fire can destroy the creature and the dimensional pocket in turn; this has the potential to destroy the item inside as well, but this is a risk worth taking to gather the supplies that they are protecting.

Ingworm Cache: This creature is not a real storage pod at all but a type of Ing of low rank that is forced to act as a living storage unit for use by the rest of its kind and their darklings in the Sky Temple and Ing Hive. The mass that makes up this storage pod comes from a series of small Ingworms that tightly weave themselves together to form a solid sheet that protects certain goods that the Ing might have a use for in the future. Sadly, these creatures do not have the ability to attack or defend themselves and have very weak defenses, so sustained fire can easily destroy them and demonstrate why they were given the lowly status of storage container by the Ing in the first place.

Flying Ing Cache: These creatures are the flying storage units of the Ing and are biologically and mentally designed to grow around objects of importance and then use their bodies to protect them. Unlike other lowly storage creatures, however, these creatures are able to hide themselves from view using a cloaking field, making them effectively invisible to the naked eye and only observable though Dark Visor technology. Moreover, they tend to hide in places where most creatures are never able to reach or find them, which may explain why they were used exclusively to store the keys to the Sky Temple on Dark Aether.

Bryyo Coffers: These storage creates were used by the native Reptilicus of Bryyo in order to transport goods during times of war where Kashh plants could not be grown. Their tapered, squat form puts them low to the ground and they are usually lightly-armored enough to be easily destroyed by basic gunfire, but the Large Bryyo Coffers are a bit more armored and require heavy firepower to break open.

Kashh Plants: Similar to the Luminoth, these creatures have been semi-bioengineered (though in a much more primitive manner than that used by the Luminoth) to grow over supplies as they develop and eventually mature. These bulbous plants can easily be ruptured to retrieve their contents when they are young, but as they age and turn into the Mature Kashh Plant, they develop a bark-like outer skin that can only be penetrated with heavy weaponry.

SkyTown Storage Units: These cylindrical storage crates were once used by the Elysian machines to store energy and ammunition for later use and are found in at least two different sizes. Most of them are small enough to be destroyed with basic gunfire, but the Heavy units have stronger armor and can only be destroyed with heavy weaponry.

Space Pirate Crates: Despite their attitude towards their profession, Space Pirates abhor theft and will often use these cone-shaped containers in order to hide away supplies. These devices contain extremely complicated lock systems that only Space Pirates can understand, so the best way to obtain their content is to destroy them; smaller crates can be busted with basic weaponry, but the Large crates require more substantial firepower to crack as a result of their thicker metal plating.

Heavy Phazon Container: As their name might suggest, these are special creates that have been designed and built to be able to handle the energetic effects of Phazon and in turn make it safe to transport the substance without inducing Phazon Fever from direct contact. The style of these pods’ structure is different depending upon the type of Space Pirate that designed them and the amount of Phazon that is being stored, but they are all alike in that the durable metals used to construct them can only be destroyed with heavy weaponry. Thankfully, though, this can be used to one’s advantage in a fight if the canisters are present, as the deliverance of an energetic blast to the substance in a space where the container is damaged can ignite the entire load, creating a massive explosion that will often kill anything that is standing by it.

Central Specimen Tank: This machine adorns the center of the Metroid Processing room of the Pirate Homeworld is used primarily for the testing of subjects when exposed to differing amounts of Phazon and through varying application processes. The machine is equipped with a small auto-cycling lift for transporting Phazon samples (and, conveniently, anything the size and shape of a Morph Ball) between the lower and upper floors of the room and can be used as an Phazon-powered reactor in some cases if needed, though it is rarely used as such due to the normally well-maintained energy grid in the Research Facility. In truth, though, it is this recent lack of need for the machine as an active reactor that led to the decline of its transport system and overall abandonment relative to the active incubation chambers surrounding it, though Samus Aran was able to repair the device to make it operational again at the cost of alerting more Space Pirates on the planet of her current location.

Bion Crate: These storage crates were used by the original inhabitants of the planet Bion to store food and material resources for safekeeping, and even to this day, they still perform the duty they were originally designed for. While the locking mechanisms might not be operational due being fused shut over time from the heat of the planet and its volcanic activity, this has also weakened the metal they are comprised of at the same time, so they can be destroyed with decently-powered weapons to reveal their contents for anyone to pick up and then use.

BOTTLE SHIP Crates: These locked safes are generally used by the crew of the BOTTLE SHIP to store valuable items such as Missile Tanks and Energy Parts and keep them out of the hands of those that do not have the proper authorization to access them. They are generally quite sturdy and can be very hard to breach with one’s bare hands or physical strikes without the specific key combination needed to open them, but the explosive power of a Morph Ball Bomb or Missile, as well as the sheer energetic power of the Screw Attack, is usually enough to break them.
