Spoink (the Bounce Pokémon) is an uncommon Psychic-type Pokémon found among grassy fields and mountainous terrain within the Hoenn, Unova, Kalos, Paldea and Kitakami regions as well as the Kanto, Johto and Sinnoh regions on rare occasions. Though perhaps not perfectly suited for extensive battle or any battle off of the ground, Spoink are adorable little creatures that can certainly play a decent defensive game at an early age. They certainly might have some potential in battle, but try to make sure that you don't accidentally pick one up for more than a minute, as there are few things as displeasing as going home with little more than a dead pig as a trophy!

For reasons that are still not well-understood, Spoink are born anatomically disfigured and have a very poor circulatory system that is unable to completely keep itself going without some form of external kinetic shock to keep all of their heart valves and muscles working. As such, from the moment they are born, Spoink must keep themselves in constant motion (even when asleep) in order to keep their hearts beating. This isn't to say that completely holding still for a few moments won't kill them, but if blood circulation stops for more than a few minutes, Spoink will die from oxygen starvation (which in turn prevents them from readily feeding on mushrooms growing beneath the ground, their favorite type of food). In order to rectify this issue, Spoink have developed an excessively curly tail that acts as a large spring, storing large amounts of potential energy before converting it to kinetic energy and driving their bodies upward, creating the shock needed to maintain healthy blood flow. Aside from allowing Spoink and their evolved form, Grumpig, to learn the Splash and Bounce moves, these springy tails offer trainers and other Pokémon alike a great deal of amusement, as Spoink will occasionally compete with another to see who can bounce the highest while still holding onto their pearl; this is usually done not for territorial or even mating purposes but simply for enjoyment, indicating that they are relatively carefree despite their otherwise distorted anatomy.

Although they are generally classified as Psychic-types for their ability to utilize psychic power extensively, Spoink are actually very poor manipulators of psychic energy and cannot actually utilize their powers to attack without something to focus their power within; as such, Spoink are born with a powerful, pink pearl that acts as a focusing beacon for psychokinetic energy and thus enables them to deliver Psychic-type attacks in battle. It is unknown how and why the pearl actually forms while these creatures are still in their egg, but is quite possible that it may just be an evolutionary response to their plight. Regardless, these strange pearls are almost irreplaceable in the wild and, despite being very sturdy, are often taken by collectors for their brilliant appearance and nearly perfect physical characteristics. Oddly enough, Spoink that have lost their pearls have on occasion traveled near shorelines and taken the pearls from Clamperl that have washed up from a recent storm because, as it just so happens, the two types of pearls are almost perfectly identical in their structure and functions. This amazing similarity rarely ever leads to fights between the two species, but it nonetheless makes it difficult to tell whether or not a captured Spoink actually has its original pearl or one stolen from another, though it will matter little in practice once they manage to evolve.

While they might be a bit too quirky for some trainers to use properly, Spoink are interesting creatures that can give trainers willing to try out their unorthodox styles a little bit of fun. They certainly might not be able to remain off the ground very long before perishing, but as long as you don't like to hug your Pokémon a whole lot, this probably won't be much of an issue. Just be sure to take good care of them and never play any cruel pranks even if it's just for a laugh, as once they evolve, these swine will do whatever it takes to manipulate others to gain a little retribution!

I think the Pokedex is wrong about Spoink having to bounce constantly in order to stay alive.

I saw Spoink stop bouncing with no fatal effects in both the anime and the 3D games.
